On this page I will post strange reviews that have been inspired by a particular song. I use these thoughts to inspire me in writing my own so-called-poetry. This time, it's Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk by Emperor. Thanks to Clare for lending me it :D.
1) Al Svartr (the Oath)
This song is basically just an introduction, but it is also rather wonderful. It sets the scene and the mood. It puts you at peace with the world temporarily, even when the sun shines, this song will automatically lift you and place you in a forest in the dead of the night. With a rumbly voice coming from somewhere.
2) Ye Entrancemperium
A rude awakening, as full black metal drum and guitar start at the speed of light, with the rather forgotten 'bee-in-a-bucket' guitar sound. Rages on until about 3 minutes in when fake-orchestra depth starts to sest in amidst the racket. Samoth has a little whine with someone, before returning to full speed rage, when it suddenly ends.
3) Thus Spake the Nightspirit
This is perhaps the weirdest song on the album, which sets no particular scene, except that of weirdness. Although my least favourite song on the album, it's still good.
4) Ensorcelled by Khoas
Fake orchestras and riffing at the same time here. As well as of course, Samoth screaming. Nice big slow bit in middle. Ends in drawn-out distortiony thing. You can tell that this band have influenced Cradle of Filth, and that's damn-well saying something!
5) The Loss and Curse of Reverence
Rather a fast beginning, which then goes on to acquire a weird squeaky sound in the background. 1 minute in, goes into big slow choiry bit before returning to raging guitars with squeaking again. Although this time, the squeaker emits another melody, as do the guitars emit a racket in a different stanza. Weird talking bit at 3:19 with strings making strange tune after. Ends in a slow-motion version of the starting tune. And Samoth screaming.
6) The Acclaimation of Bonds
Uplifting bit with irregular patterns throughout. Very uplifting bit in middle. Emperor are certainly ones for uplifting middles. Squeaking again at 3:30. ( they quite like squeaking too.) Slow churchbell bit, before, you guessed it, speeding bit. BUT THEN, exTREEmly uplifting choir-on-its-own bit. Only two chords, but effective all the same. Screaming and fastness. sudden ending.
7) With Strength I Burn
Bit with 3 chords in the 1-2-1-3 style. Slows down for choiry bit. now 1-2-3-1 style with choir. Samoth (and mate) whine a bit again. Don't get the idea I don't like his whining, coz I do! Very long song, (8:19!) consists mainly of Samoth (and mate) whining. Rather -Old Man's Child 'Black Seeds on Virgin Soil' -like bit. Still good.
8) The Wanderer
Insp i ring, d e e p begin ning. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Slo o o o w w w w w . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . c o n t i n u e ssss. . . . . e n d s ..... s l o o o o o w w w w w w ll l l y y y .... . I'm not stoned.
*9) In Longing Spirit
Weird, rather repetitive beginning. Actually, so is the whole song. Quite boring. Samoth's entrance sounds scarily like that of Cradle's usual. Slow song. Probably stoned when they wrote this.
*10) Opus A Satana
This, I do believe, is an instrumental. Frantic entrance on strings. Slows down, gets faster, slows down, slows down. slows down. Enter fake choir, steady pace. Sounds like star-trek when ending.
*11) The Loss and Curse of Reverance (Live)
Serious, serious squeaking. same tune as before. Seems faster. And live-er. Otherwise, see above.
* Extra Track.
